Being Led from God’s Glory

  1. Moses and the glory
  2. Moses goes into the glory and hears from God.

Exodus 24:1,7,12,13,16,18
1 Now He said to Moses, “Come up to the LORD, you and Aaron, Nadab and Abihu, and seventy of the elders of Israel, and worship from afar.

7 Then he took the Book of the Covenant and read in the hearing of the people. And they said, “All that the LORD has said we will do, and be obedient.”

12 Then the LORD said to Moses, “Come up to Me on the mountain and be there; and I will give you tablets of stone, and the law and commandments which I have written, that you may teach them.”

13 So Moses arose with his assistant Joshua, and Moses went up to the mountain of God.

16 Now the glory of the LORD rested on Mount Sinai, and the cloud covered it six days. And on the seventh day He called to Moses out of the midst of the cloud.

18 So Moses went into the midst of the cloud and went up into the mountain. And Moses was on the mountain forty days and forty nights (NKJV).

  1. God gives Moses instructions from the glory.

Exodus 31:18 – And when He had made an end of speaking with him on Mount Sinai, He gave Moses two tablets of the Testimony, tablets of stone, written with the finger of God” (NKJV).

  1. When Moses comes down to tell the people, they are backslidden.

Exodus 32:1,2,19-24

32:1 Now when the people saw that Moses delayed coming down from the mountain, the people gathered together to Aaron, and said to him, “Come, make us gods that shall go before us; for as for this Moses, the man who brought us up out of the land of Egypt, we do not know what has become of him.”

2 And Aaron said to them, “Break off the golden earrings which are in the ears of your wives, your sons, and your daughters, and bring them to me.”

19 So it was, as soon as he came near the camp, that he saw the calf and the dancing. So Moses’ anger became hot, and he cast the tablets out of his hands and broke them at the foot of the mountain.

20 Then he took the calf which they had made, burned it in the fire, and ground it to powder; and he scattered it on the water and made the children of Israel drink it.

21 And Moses said to Aaron, “What did this people do to you that you have brought so great a sin upon them?”

22 So Aaron said, “Do not let the anger of my lord become hot. You know the people, that they are set on evil.

23 “For they said to me, ‘Make us gods that shall go before us; as for this Moses, the man who brought us out of the land of Egypt, we do not know what has become of him.’

24 “And I said to them, ‘Whoever has any gold, let them break it off.’ So they gave it to me, and I cast it into the fire, and this calf came out” (NKJV).

  1. Jesus and the glory
  2. Jesus goes into the glory on the mountain.

Mark 9:2-4
2 Now after six days Jesus took Peter, James, and John, and led them up on a high mountain apart by themselves; and He was transfigured before them.

3 His clothes became shining, exceedingly white, like snow, such as no launderer on earth can whiten them.

4 And Elijah appeared to them with Moses, and they were talking with Jesus (NKJV).

  1. Peter misinterprets the meaning.

Mark 9:5-7
5 Then Peter answered and said to Jesus, “Rabbi, it is good for us to be here; and let us make three tabernacles: one for You, one for Moses, and one for Elijah” —

6 because he did not know what to say, for they were greatly afraid.

7 And a cloud came and overshadowed them; and a voice came out of the cloud, saying, “This is My beloved Son. Hear Him!” (NKJV).

  1. Jesus commands the three disciples to be silent about what they had seen until after His resurrection.

Mark 9:8-10
8 Suddenly, when they had looked around, they saw no one anymore, but only Jesus with themselves.

9 Now as they came down from the mountain, He commanded them that they should tell no one the things they had seen, till the Son of Man had risen from the dead.

10 So they kept this word to themselves, questioning what the rising from the dead meant (NKJV).

  1. Jesus comes down from the mountain to find a mob of “faithless” people.

Mark 9:14,16-19,28,29

14 And when He came to the disciples, He saw a great multitude around them, and scribes disputing with them.

16 And He asked the scribes, “What are you discussing with them?”

17 Then one of the crowd answered and said, “Teacher, I brought You my son, who has a mute spirit.

18 “And wherever it seizes him, it throws him down; he foams at the mouth, gnashes his teeth, and becomes rigid. So I spoke to Your disciples, that they should cast it out, but they could not.”

19 He answered him and said, “O faithless generation, how long shall I be with you? How long shall I bear with you? Bring him to Me.”

28 And when He had come into the house, His disciples asked Him privately, “Why could we not cast it out?”

29 So He said to them, “This kind can come out by nothing but prayer and fasting” (NKJV).

  1. Jesus trains His disciples on faith, humility, and holiness.

Mark 9:33-35

33 Then He came to Capernaum. And when He was in the house He asked them, “What was it you disputed among yourselves on the road?”

34 But they kept silent, for on the road they had disputed among themselves who would be the greatest.

35 And He sat down, called the twelve, and said to them, “If anyone desires to be first, he shall be last of all and servant of all” (NKJV).

III.            We can hear God speak in the glory, if we haven’t become dull of hearing.

John 10:27 – “My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me” (NKJV).

  1. Jesus quotes Isaiah.

Matthew 13:15 – “ ‘For the hearts of this people have grown dull. Their ears are hard of hearing, And their eyes they have closed, Lest they should see with their eyes and hear with their ears, Lest they should understand with their hearts and turn, So that I should heal them’” (NKJV).

  1. Paul quotes the same passage of Isaiah in Acts 28:27.
  2. Paul chides the Hebrew readers who have become dull in hearing.

Hebrews 5:11 – of whom we have much to say, and hard to explain, since you have become dull of hearing (NKJV).

  1. Mary reveals the secret of faith.

John 2:5 – His mother said to the servants, “Whatever He says to you, do it” (NKJV).

  1. Let Jesus manifest His glory in you!

John 2:11 – This beginning of signs Jesus did in Cana of Galilee, and manifested His glory; and His disciples believed in Him (NKJV).
