The Beginning of Miracles
A. God begins the miracle of Creation.
Genesis 1:1, 2b
1:1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.
2… And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters (NKJV).
1. The Holy Spirit is always hovering.
2. “Then God said…” – Genesis 1:3, 6, 9, 11, 14, 20, 24, 26, 29
3. The Holy Spirit produced only when God spoke.
B. Jesus, the Word, was with God from the beginning.
1. Jesus provided voice to God’s thoughts.
John 1:1, 2
1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word
was God.
2 He was in the beginning with God (NKJV).
2. Jesus then encased Himself in human form in order to dwell among us.
John 1:14 – And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth (NKJV).
C. Jesus’ first miracle happened because He spoke and gave instructions.
John 2:1-11
2:1 On the third day there was a wedding in Cana of Galilee, and the mother
of Jesus was there.
2 Now both Jesus and His disciples were invited to the wedding.
3 And when they ran out of wine, the mother of Jesus said to Him, “They have no wine.”
4 Jesus said to her, “Woman, what does your concern have to do with Me? My hour has not yet come.”
5 His mother said to the servants, “Whatever He says to you, do it.”
6 Now there were set there six waterpots of stone, according to the manner of purification of the Jews, containing twenty or thirty gallons apiece.
7 Jesus said to them, “Fill the waterpots with water.” And they filled them up to the brim.
8 And He said to them, “Draw some out now, and take it to the master of the feast.” And they took it.
9 When the master of the feast had tasted the water that was made wine, and did not know where it came from (but the servants who had drawn the water knew), the master of the feast called the bridegroom.
10 And he said to him, “Every man at the beginning sets out the good wine, and when the guests have well drunk, then the inferior. You have kept the good wine until now!”
11 This beginning of signs Jesus did in Cana of Galilee, and manifested His glory; and His disciples believed in Him (NKJV).
1. Mary, inspired by the Holy Spirit, told the servants to do whatever Jesus says (verse 5).
2. Jesus instructed the servants to fill the water pots with water (verse 7).
3. The water was turned into wine as Jesus told them to draw it out (verse 8).
4. The miracles that Jesus performs manifests His glory (verse 11).
D. Every miracle starts by hearing Jesus’ anointed instructions and acting on them.
1. Peter walks on the water to Jesus.
Matthew 14:22-33
22 Immediately Jesus made His disciples get into the boat and go before
Him to the other side, while He sent the multitudes away.
23 And when He had sent the multitudes away, He went up on the mountain by Himself to pray. Now when evening came, He was alone there.
24 But the boat was now in the middle of the sea, tossed by the waves, for the wind was contrary.
25 Now in the fourth watch of the night Jesus went to them, walking on the sea.
26 And when the disciples saw Him walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying, “It is a ghost!” And they cried out for fear.
27 But immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying, “Be of good cheer! It is I; do not be afraid.”
28 And Peter answered Him and said, “Lord, if it is You, command me to come to You on the water.”
29 So He said, “Come.” And when Peter had come down out of the boat, he walked on the water to go to Jesus.
30 But when he saw that the wind was boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink he cried out, saying, “Lord, save me!”
31 And immediately Jesus stretched out His hand and caught him, and said to him, “O you of little faith, why did you doubt?”
32 And when they got into the boat, the wind ceased.
33 Then those who were in the boat came and worshiped Him, saying, “Truly You are the Son of God” (NKJV).
a. Jesus tells His disciples to stop the fear (verse 27).
b. Peter says, “If it is You, Lord, command me to come” (verse 28).
c. Jesus gave the simplest command ever: “Come.” At His word, faith came into Peter’s heart to walk on the water (verse 29).
d. Even after stepping out in faith and receiving a miracle, anyone can slip back into doubt, but calling out to Jesus reaffirms the miracle power (verse 31).
Conclusion:
Miracles have 3 parts:
1. Hear from Jesus the anointed, miracle-power-filled word.
2. Do whatever He says to do.
3. Let the Father demonstrate the miracle… and manifest the glory of Jesus.
