THE AUTHORITY OF JESUS AND HIS PARTNERS

Jesus had authority through the anointing.

Acts 10:38 – “…how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power, who went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with Him” (NKJV).

The chief priests and elders asked Jesus where His authority came from.

Matthew 21:23 – Now when He came into the temple, the chief priests and the elders of the people confronted Him as He was teaching, and said, “By what authority are You doing these things? And who gave You this authority?” (NKJV).

Jesus told them that He would tell them if they could answer His question.

Matthew 21:24,25
24 But Jesus answered and said to them, “I also will ask you one thing, which if you tell Me, I likewise will tell you by what authority I do these things:

25a “The baptism of John--where was it from? From heaven or from men?” (NKJV).

Their human reasoning was insufficient.

Matthew 21:25b-27a
25b
And they reasoned among themselves, saying, “If we say, ‘From heaven,’ He will say to us, ‘Why then did you not believe him?’”

26 “But if we say, ‘From men,’ we fear the multitude, for all count John as a prophet.”

27a So they answered Jesus and said, “We do not know” (NKJV).

Jesus refused to tell them.

Matthew 21:27b – And He said to them, “Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things” (NKJV).

Great faith understands delegated authority

A centurion recognized Jesus’ authority.

Matthew 8:5-9
5 Now when Jesus had entered Capernaum, a centurion came to Him, pleading with Him,

6 saying, “Lord, my servant is lying at home paralyzed, dreadfully tormented.”

7 And Jesus said to him, “I will come and heal him.”

8 The centurion answered and said, “Lord, I am not worthy that You should come under my roof. But only speak a word, and my servant will be healed.

9 “For I also am a man under authority, having soldiers under me. And I say to this one, ‘Go,’ and he goes; and to another, ‘Come,’ and he comes; and to my servant, ‘Do this,’ and he does it” (NKJV).

Jesus said that it was a greater understanding of faith than He had seen in all of Israel.

Matthew 8:10-13
10
When Jesus heard it, He marveled, and said to those who followed, “Assuredly, I say to you, I have not found such great faith, not even in Israel!

11 “And I say to you that many will come from east and west, and sit down with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven.

12 “But the sons of the kingdom will be cast out into outer darkness. There will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.”

13 Then Jesus said to the centurion, “Go your way; and as you have believed, so let it be done for you.” And his servant was healed that same hour (NKJV).

Jesus delegated authority to His partners to preach, heal, deliver, and raise the dead.

Matthew 10:1 – And when He had called His twelve disciples to Him, He gave them power over unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal all kinds of sickness and all kinds of disease (NKJV).

Matthew 10:7,8
7 “And as you go, preach, saying, ‘The kingdom of heaven is at hand.’

8 “Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out demons. Freely you have received, freely give” (NKJV).

Jesus repeated the transfer of delegated authority.

Matthew 28:18-20
18
And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth.

19 “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,

20 “teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen (NKJV).

Jesus said His partners could be clothed with power.

Luke 24:49 – “Behold, I send the Promise of My Father upon you; but tarry in the city of Jerusalem until you are endued with power from on high” (NKJV).

It happens when the Holy Spirit comes upon you.

Acts 1:4,5,8
4 And being assembled together with them, He commanded them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the Promise of the Father, “which,” He said, “you have heard from Me;

5 “for John truly baptized with water, but you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.”

8 “But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth” (NKJV).

We are now clothed with this delegated authority. We become more confident in it the more we continue to pray in tongues and use this delegated authority.
