1 Cor. 12:1, 7-11
1
Now concerning spiritual gifts, brethren, I do not want you to be ignorant:

7 …the manifestation of the Spirit is given to each one for the profit of all:

8 for to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, to another the word of knowledge through the same Spirit,

9 to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healings by the same Spirit,

10 to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another discerning of spirits, to another different kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues.

11 But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually as He wills (NKJV).

  1. The word of knowledge is the supernatural revelation by the Holy Spirit of certain facts in the mind of God, facts about people, places, or things in the past or present.

  1. The Bible calls this gift the “word of knowledge,” not the gift of knowledge.
  2. We must call spiritual gifts what the Bible calls them or we will become confused.
  3. There is no such thing as a spiritual “gift of knowledge.”
  4. The spiritual gift of the word of knowledge is not referring to natural knowledge any more than the gifts of healings is referring to medical science.
  5. We believe in medical science and thank God for all it can do.
  6. But this passage of Scripture is talking about gifts of the Holy Spirit – supernatural knowledge and supernatural healings, etc.
  7. Neither is the word of knowledge a profound knowledge of the Bible.
  8. That comes through study.
  9. Paul said, “Study to show thyself approved…” (2 Timothy 2:15 KJV).
  10. The word of knowledge is not knowledge of God through close communion with Him.
  11. One does gain a real knowledge of God by walking with Him, but that is different from a supernatural impartation of knowledge of certain facts in the mind of God.
  12. It is also true that no one will have the word of knowledge in operation consistently in their ministry unless they have gained a real knowledge of God due to walking with Him.

  1. Old Testament examples of the word of knowledge
  2. The word of knowledge to Elisha regarding war plans (2 Kings 6:8-12)
  3. The King of Syria tried again and again to ambush the King of Israel, but each time Elisha received a word of knowledge and warned his king.
  4. The King of Syria thought there had to be a spy in his inner circle who told the King of Israel his plans.
  5. His servants replied, “No, it is Elisha, the prophet. He even knows the words you speak in your bedroom.”
  6. The word of knowledge to Elisha regarding Gehazi (2 Kings 5:21-24)
  7. Naaman was healed of leprosy and wanted to give Elisha silver, gold, and beautiful new clothes.
  8. Elisha refused, but his servant, Gehazi, ran after Naaman and lied to him.
  9. God gave Elisha a word of knowledge and exposed Gehazi (2 Kings 5:26).

  1. New Testament examples of the word of knowledge
  2. The word of knowledge to Jesus regarding the woman at the well (John 4:7-26)
  3. Jesus operated in the word of knowledge to convince the woman of her need for a Savior.
  4. The word of knowledge to Peter regarding Ananias and Sapphira (Acts 5:1-4)
  5. The word of knowledge was used to reveal that Ananias and Sapphira had lied to the Church and to the Holy Ghost.

  1. The word of knowledge is a powerful aid to prayer during a time of distress.
  2. Can be used to reveal sickness
  3. Can be used to reveal the presence of an evil spirit, but usually another spiritual gift known as the discerning of spirits works with the word of knowledge in such cases.
  4. Can be used to help you find things
